The National Union of Journalists of Ukraine, with the support of the International and European Federations of Journalists, is launching a network of Journalists’ Solidarity Centers to help media workers during the war. Such centers have been opened in Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Chernivtsi based on regional organizations of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine. The centers will help colleagues to adjust to a new place, will inform about vacancies in the media, and support programs for journalists and newsrooms. In emergencies, journalists evacuated from combat areas will receive emergency financial assistance.
Ukrainian and foreign journalists who are in the war zone, or have moved to any other region of Ukraine, or have come on a business trip to Ukraine will be able to apply for support to the Centers – in person or remotely.
In the centers, journalists will be able to work, access the Internet, hold a meeting or stream, use the necessary equipment, and find the right contacts. There are also trainings and other educational events for journalists from different regions. The NUJU will provide protective equipment and first aid kits to media workers covering the military actions through the Journalists’ Solidarity Centers.
The President of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine Sergiy Tomilenko, notes: “In these difficult days, all journalists unite for mutual assistance. Our international partners do not stay away from the problems of Ukrainian media workers and try to provide practical assistance in every possible way. The Journalists’ Solidarity Centers implement a wish to help colleagues effectively.”
The project are supported by the International Federation of Journalists and the European Federation of Journalists, and in partnership with the Independent Media Trade Union of Ukraine. Resources to help Ukrainian media workers are provided by international partners – journalists’ associations, media companies, and institutions.
Anthony Bellanger, General Secretary of the International Federation of Journalists commented: “International solidarity with journalists under fire in Ukraine is critical to enable them to tell the truth about the devastating consequences of the Russian invasion. Journalists are at the forefront of exposing the real human consequences of this barbaric war on Ukraine. The IFJ is proud to be able to support and partner NUJU in establishing vital centres to provide that practical solidarity with frontline journalists – from safety and protection to professional support”.
