On the World Press Freedom Day, which is marked on May 3, the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU) announces the launch of the Foundation for the Memory of Killed Journalists.
The Foundation’s activities will be aimed at helping the families of journalists who killed during the large-scale Russian war in Ukraine. Charitable donations from Ukrainian and foreign media, journalists and other NGOs, foundations and institutions, and individual citizens will be transferred to a separate account of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine. Funds from this account will be transferred to children and other family members of killed colleagues.
Journalism is a profession of brave persons. After all, being committed to professional standards and preparing credible materials means that a journalist consciously risks becoming a target for the Russian occupiers – commented NUJU President Sergiy Tomilenko – It is our duty to support all current front-line correspondents. And to pay tribute to the victims of the war.
The decision on the payment of funds raised by the Fund will be made by the NUJU Secretariat on the proposal of the special assistance commission. A supervisory board will be created to monitor the Foundation’s activities, which will include authoritative journalists and media figures: Olga Musafirova, Mykola Semena, Serhiy Shevchenko and others.
The National Union of Journalists of Ukraine has already made the first contribution to the Foundation for the Memory of Killed Journalists – 30.000 UAH. Information about how to help the families of the killed journalists are also published in the stories of the special project “Media Memorial“, which was created by the national TV channel ICTV (Starlight Media).
The National Union of Journalists of Ukraine has launched an account in the national currency of Ukraine – UAH. Donations in other currencies can be transferred to IFJ/EFJ Safety Fund.
